Design Story and Inspiration for this Crochet Headband Pattern
I love making baby things, and if you've hung around my blog for any length of time you know there are a ton of free crochet baby patterns. (If you'd like to see them, you can check them out here – don't worry, I'll hold this tab open for you. 😉
One thing I've never designed for the site is a baby headband! So I figured this spring was a perfect time to do it – I've even added an adorable flower on it for you, and you can find that free pattern linked below!
Yarn Options for this Crochet Baby Headband
I created this cute headband pattern with a beautiful tonal fingering yarn (weight #1) called Hawthorne from We Crochet. This yarn is gorgeous as it changes colors and the feel is sublime.
This yarn is a wool and polyamide blend, but it doesn't feel scratchy like a lot of wools do. This yarn is soft and supple and I really enjoyed working with it.
If you'd like to substitute (I know we all like to use up our stashes!), you can use any fingering (weight #1) yarn that gets gauge. There are a ton of beautiful fingering-weight yarns out there and you can find easy substitutions at yarnsub.com. This is a great project for that scrap yarn!

Crochet Baby Headband Pattern Details
This tiny headband is worked in the round, and I've written it for several baby sizes. You can change the width of it just by working more or fewer rows. I wanted a nice thin headband, but for a larger baby you might prefer a thicker band. No problem, just keep working in pattern until it's as wide as you like!
The flower is crocheted separately and sewn on. This is a super easy crocheted flower, so don't worry if you are newer to crochet and don't know how to crochet a flower. There is even a separate video tutorial for that post to help you out!

Common Questions About Baby Headbands
How do you make an easy crochet baby headband?
These are very simple projects to make because they are so small. There are two ways you can crochet an adorable headband – in the round with no seams or flat with a seam in the back. Either way, you can choose from lots of different textured stitches and wonderful yarns to make a beautiful headband. Then, you can always add a flower, bow or other applique.
How wide should a baby headband be?
This is really up to the crocheter. There are many different widths of headbands and no right or wrong ones. The smallest are usually just around a half an inch (about one centimeter) and usually have a larger flower or other item for interest. The larger ones will be up to two inches wide, covering more of the baby's head and can also still have decorations.
